RUS Copernicus will provide a half day hands-on training session where participants will access from their own laptop a Virtual Machine to exploit the open source software and toolboxes available in the RUS environment to download and process Sentinel-3 data.

Please note that the RUS Copernicus Virtual Machines used for this training course can only be provided to citizens/residents of the Copernicus programme member countries (EU plus Iceland and Norway).

Background

The Gulf Stream is an oceanic current originating in the Bahamas. It carries hot waters from the tropic towards Greenland, forming numerous large swirls and eddies along the way. This current is an essential component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and has a deterministic impact on the western European climate. Recent studies have shown that the stability of this major oceanic current may be threatened by global warming. It is hence fundamental to map and monitor the evolution of its circulation in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Space borne technologies such as the Sentinel-3 mission constitute a privileged observation system to track the Gulf Stream.

The Sentinel-3 (S3) constellation is composed of two identical satellites: Sentinel-3A (S3A) and Sentinel-3B (S3B). The mission objectives are to quantify large-scale surface (both ocean and land) colour and temperature phenomena as well as to measure accurately the oceans and inland water bodies elevation. To fulfil these ambitious goals, each satellite carries three instruments: the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) and the Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL). The data recorded by this pair of satellites is free of use and present a great interest to study our Earth surface.

This half day hands-on training session targets a beginner audience. It will focus on the processing of Sentinel-3 OLCI and SLSTR measurements to monitor the Gulf Stream. The SNAP and Panoply software will be used throughout the workshop.

After an introduction to the S3 mission and associated products, you will manipulate OLCI and SLSTR data to detect the Gulf Stream in several products. First, you will learn to retrieve manually and automatically S3 products from different data hubs. Then, the course will demonstrate the extensive applications and advantages of combining S3 OLCI data with S3 SLSTR products to study the various manifestations of this oceanic current.

Equipment

Attendees must be in possession of their own computer with a microphone to follow the online training and will be provided with access to the RUS platform Virtual Machine.

Audience & Selection

This training session is designed for a beginner audience, wishing to discover Sentinel-3 data download and processing. Space is limited to 20 participants on a first-come first-served basis.
